Westchester County, NY – December 14, 2023 – Enel North America, a clean energy leader in the US and Canada, has broken ground on three new front-of-the-meter battery energy storage systems in Westchester County, New York. The batteries will add 13.5 MW / 55.7 MWh of dispatchable energy capacity to the grid in an area with heavy grid congestion and growing energy demand.
The portfolio of projects in Westchester County includes a 4.2 MW / 16.9 MWh battery system in Ossining, a 4.3 / 17.3 MWh battery system in Yorktown Heights, and a 5 MW / 21.5 MWh battery system in Hawthorne.
“We’re thrilled to add much needed dispatchable capacity to the grid in Westchester County,” said Matt Barnes, Head of Distributed Energy Solutions at Enel North America. “These batteries will not only help improve grid resilience and stability as New York progresses in its energy transition, but they will also help mitigate the impacts of the growing grid congestion and energy demand in the region.”
Once operational in the summer of 2024, the batteries will participate in New York’s Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) program. The assets will provide additional capacity to help alleviate grid stress during times of critical peak demand, and participate in available NYISO wholesale energy and capacity markets when possible to drive additional value. The projects also provide financial benefits to the landowners in the form of annual lease payments.
Batteries have the ability to discharge energy to the grid within seconds to respond to rapid and unexpected changes in grid conditions and help prevent grid emergencies. Energy storage systems also help maintain affordable energy prices in the market by storing electricity when supply is high and costs are low and dispatching that energy during times of peak demand and high rates, balancing supply and demand on the grid.
The projects support New York’s energy transition goals and will help propel the state toward its target of reaching 6 GW of energy storage by 2030.
The Westchester County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) provided financial incentives in the form of sales tax exemptions for the Ossining and Yorktown Heights projects, while the Hawthorne project received similar incentives from the Town of Mount Pleasant IDA.
